Historical Discourses is an annual open-accessed peer-reviewed undergraduate academic journal based out of McGill University. It serves as a scholarly forum for undergraduate students at McGill to critically engage with a range of intellectual and public debates through historical inquiry.

We invite all McGill undergraduates and recently graduated scholars to submit full-length research articles for the Spring 2017 issue. Topics from all geographical, temporal and thematic areas are welcome. Authors may submit up to two articles for consideration. Papers may be submitted in either English or French.


Length // Articles, double-spaced (11 point font, preferably Times New Roman), including all references should not exceed 30 pages, and the style should conform to that outlined in the Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition (University of Chicago Press).

Coversheet // Please include the following information on a separate cover sheet:
Paper Title
A short abstract (250 to 300 words)
Your full name, program and email address

The deadline for submission is February 12, 2017 at 11:59PM. Submissions should be sent as an email attachment in PDF format to, along with a short bio (maximum 100 words). Articles must be original and previously unpublished.

Historical Discourses is a journal for showcasing exceptional research and writing by undergraduates within the History Department. Remember, publication in academic journals looks great on CV’s and Graduate school applications. You can download this year’s publication and previous editions in PDF format at the bottom of the page.

Please note: Historical Discourses is published annually by McGill University undergraduate history students. All essays become property of Historical Discourses and cannot be reproduced without the permission of the authors. Historical Discourses accepts history papers written by McGill undergraduate students in either English or French.
