Dear History Students,
We would like to officially welcome back all returning students as well as give a very warm greeting to all new students who have joined us in our program and at McGill University! AS most of you have hopefully noticed by now, the annual construction has resumed on Sherbrooke and McTavish, as per every fall semester and as historically predicted. Regardless, we are very excited to be back and kicking the year off with some great plans in store for McGill’s best Arts department. We can’t wait to see and meet you all over the course of the 2016-2017 academic year!
This Week in History
At the start of each email, we will include either a historical fact or a quote from a historical figure – keep your eye out for interesting trivia tidbits as the year continues! This week’s “This Week in History”:
On September 11th of 1297, Scots under William Wallace defeated the English at Stirling Bridge.
On September 15th of 1981, Sandra Day O’Connor was unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee and became the first female justice on the US Supreme Court.
Message for First Year Students
- The HSA’s office is on the sixth floor of Leacock room 628. Don’t be afraid to pass by if you have any questions, comments, concerns, or interesting historical anecdotes you urgently have to tell somebody.
- We might not be able to answer certain questions that you might have, in which case, we recommend that you meet with your assigned academic advisor. For a full list of advisors, see the Department of History website, or pass by the HSA office and take a look at the list on the door.
Meet Your New Departmental Executive
President: Kate Bauer
Kate is a U3 Honours History student from Burlington, Ontario who is serving as president of the HSA this year. As a student, she has a particular interest in intellectual history, the history of memory and serving as the go-to history expert on pub trivia teams. This is her first year involved with the HSA and she is excited to bring a fresh spin to a historic students’ association: she wants to focus particularly on attracting first and second-year students to the major and wants to keep things hip ‘n happening in the HSA Office. She likes iced coffee, the 6th floor of McLennan, being a huge keener, and replies to emails surprisingly quickly.
Office Hours: Wednesdays 10h00 – 11h30
V.P. Finance: Pelle Jörgen
Pelle is a U3 Honours History student with a minor in geography. He is most interested in modern German history and early-modern political history – he is slowly but surely working to correct his Eurocentrism. Outside of school, his pastimes centre around felines, football, and frolicking with friends. Have a question or just looking for someone to frolic with?
Office Hours: Tuesdays 11h30-13h00
V.P. Communications and Publicity : Tiffany Alves-Wallace
Tiffany is a U3 student in History and Political Science. Her interests focus on Latin America, its colonial past, its dictatorships, military regimes and its relations with the U.S.. Outside of school, she enjoys reading (nothing related to school unless she has to), drawing and visiting as many museums as possible.
Office Hours: Fridays 10h00-11h30
V.P. Events: Véronica López Lampré
Véronica is a U4 student in History and Political Science. She enjoys examining such uplifting topics as civil rights, memories of collective trauma, law enforcement in the U.S. and the connections between all three. She has a great relationship with her barista at Second Cup, and really really likes dogs. When she’s not at Second Cup studying, she’s either watching the West Wing or coming up with ideas for events for you!
Office Hours: Thursdays 11h30-13h00
V.P. Internal: Alyssia Krencisz
Alyssia is a U3 History and Political Science student. Her academic interests lean towards the Middle Ages and the Early Modern period with a focus on European social and political history. She enjoys reading, playing soccer and travelling to new countries.
Office Hours: Mondays 10h00 – 11h30
V.P. Academic and External: Adam R. Templer
Adam is a U4 History and Political Science double major. His main focus is ancient Mediterranean history with a focus on Greece and Rome, and European history from Napoleon onwards. He lives in a small town on the outskirts of Burlington, Ontario and freaked out when he learned Kate was from there as well. His primary hobbies are reading (mostly science fiction or history books), exercising and writing.
Office Hours: Tuesdays 10h00-11h30
As listed above, all members of the executive team have office hours each week, which means our office is open Monday through Friday. The door will always be open if one of us is there. Do not be afraid to pass by if you have any questions, concerns or just want to talk! Or just send us a message to any of our respective emails or even our social media accounts!. Office hours will begin on Monday, September 12, 2016.
